This antique 12-bore bar-action hammer sidelock game gun exemplifies traditional craftsmanship. It features 30-inch blacked Damascus steel barrels with extractor, a smooth concave game rib fitted with a brass bead front sight, 2-1/2-inch chambers, and modified and full chokes. The rib bears the roll mark "J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON" and engraved with the numeral '1'. The case color hardened rebounding hammer action body and locks display full coverage English Arabesque scroll engraving with rose bouquets, alongside "PURDEY" on both lockplates and "PURDEY'S PATENT" on bottom. The hammers engraving is of dolphins. The number "1" is also engraved on the action flats and interior fore-end metalwork. The firearm is equipped with double triggers (front articulated) with smooth blades protected by a blacked, scroll-engraved trigger guard that extends to a long bottom tang, bearing the serial number. The blacked top lever is engraved and inside an oval marked “PATENT” and is checkered on both sides of the thumb piece. The stock is constructed from finely figured, deluxe quality reddish-brown walnut with a straight hand grip, drop points, point-pattern checkering with borders, vacant stock oval on comb, and a splinter fore-end featuring an Anson style push-button release, engraved escutcheon, and golden center diamond. The shotgun has a 14-1/4-inch length of pull to a checkered butt, finished with engraved, case color hardened steel heel and toe plates. Total weight: 6 lbs. 11 oz. The firearm is presented in an associated canvas case with leather trim.
